Background of the Study

Harmful widowhood practices, such as forced confinement, property dispossession, and ritual humiliation, remain prevalent in some parts of Nigeria, including Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State. These practices violate human rights and perpetuate gender inequality, leaving widows vulnerable to economic and social exclusion. Communication has proven to be a powerful tool in challenging cultural norms and advocating for the eradication of harmful practices. Through targeted campaigns, community dialogue, and media advocacy, communication raises awareness, fosters behavioral change, and empowers communities to uphold the rights and dignity of widows (Ojo & Okoli, 2023). This study explores the impact of communication on combating these harmful practices and promoting equitable treatment of widows in Ankpa LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite legislative and advocacy efforts, harmful widowhood practices persist in Ankpa LGA due to deep-seated cultural beliefs and resistance to change. Many widows continue to face stigmatization and abuse, with limited avenues for support and redress. Communication strategies aimed at addressing these practices are often underfunded or lack cultural sensitivity, reducing their impact (Ibrahim & Adamu, 2024). This study evaluates the effectiveness of communication in eradicating harmful widowhood practices, identifying gaps and proposing strategies for sustainable change.
